Along with planning, DEM provides the necessary training and exercises to mitigate and reduce or eliminate long-term risk to students, faculty, staff, and guests and University property from hazards and their effects. DEM’s desire is to achieve priority capabilities through training and exercise over the next five years. Ideally, DEM’s Multiyear Training and Exercise Schedule will use a building-block approach when determining training and exercises. The building-block approach ensures successful progression in exercise design, complexity, and execution, and allows for the appropriate training to occur in preparation for an exercise.
DEM assists in the exercise design, training, and implementation of full-scale functional exercises and table-top exercises system-wide, as well as Building Emergency Plans (BEP), Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP), fire and tornado building drills. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers free online training in the area of emergency response. There are four basic FEMA courses that serve as an introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS). They are:

The National Incident Management System (NIMS) was created to provide the Nation with a common response framework for five mission areas: prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery. NIMS is a national directive to enhance emergency response coordination across the nation.
