Radiation Committees

The University of Minnesota's broadscope radioactive materials license, issued by the Minnesota Department of Health, requires the University to oversee compliance and to issue permits to work with radioactive materials.

The University also maintains a license with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for use of radioactive materials outside of the State's jurisdiction. The University's committee structure also supports the maintenance and retention of this license.

All-University Radiation Protection Committee (AURPC)

The All University Radiation Protection Committee (AURPC) is composed of the combined membership of all the committees listed below. They advise, review, and approve radiation protection policies governing the use of ionizing radiation throughout the University of Minnesota and University related MHealth Hospitals. This committee meets on a quarterly basis.

The chairperson of this committee or its subcommittees shall not be a major user of sources of ionizing radiation at the University. Members of the committees are appointed by the University president. No member is allowed to vote on any committee action directly relating to the approval of his or her application for use of sources of ionizing radiation.

Human Use Subcommittee (HUS)

The Human Use Subcommittee (HUS) reviews applications for the use of ionizing radiation in human subjects. The subcommittee also reviews policies and procedures regarding the use of ionizing radiation for medical diagnosis and therapy at University of Minnesota related MHealth Hospitals. This committee meets quarterly, but reviews applications electronically on a routine basis.

The members of this committee also comprise the Radioactive Drug Research Subcommittee (RDRC), along with other individuals in various areas of expertise whose membership is required by the FDA. The RDRC reviews all research using experimental radioactive drugs in humans with the exception of those covered by an Investigational New Drug (IND) application.

Permit Review Subcommittee (PRS)

The Permit Review Subcommittee (PRS) reviews applications for the possession and use of radioactive materials and issues permits for use of such materials under the applicable University license. This committee meets quarterly, but reviews applications in IsoTrack on a routine basis.

University of Minnesota Duluth Radiation Protection Committee

The University of Minnesota Duluth Radiation Protection Committee advises the Department of Radiation Safety on policies and procedures relating to the use of sources of ionizing radiation on the Duluth campus. This committee meets on a biannual basis.

MHealth Operations Subcommittee

The MHealth Operations Committee is comprised of MHealth personnel that direct and operate in departments where radiation is used. This committee meets on a quarterly basis to discuss operational policy and procedure. The minutes of this meeting are shared with the AURPC for review and approval.
