Careers in BCD

Why Work With Us?

We (the public) all need building codes - whether in our homes, offices, schools, stores, places of entertainment, or here at the University. We rely on the safety of structures that surround us in our everyday living. The public need for protection from disaster due to fire, structural collapse and general deterioration underscores the need for building codes and their administration. The University’s Building Code Department is the office that is charged with the administration of these codes in accordance with the rules, regulations, and laws as adopted by the State of Minnesota. The department’s mission is to protect the health, welfare and safety of University of Minnesota students, employees and visitors in the built environment through education and code enforcement.

The University of Minnesota is a great place to develop, enhance and apply your building safety skills to the built environment. The building safety profession is a rewarding career option, and a focus on regulatory services, codes and standards allows you to work with building trades, building designers, contractors and owners. Professional development in this field works in tandem with trade organizations, registered professionals, college and university construction technology and engineering programs, and local, state and national codes and standards organizations.

The University as a jurisdiction offers a variety of unique projects including hospitals and medical facilities, classrooms and research facilities, stadiums and athletic facilities, and system campus locations in Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester, and many other unique properties owned by the University throughout the State of Minnesota.

The University of Minnesota offers competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, educational opportunities, assistance for professional and continuing education, and supportive leadership. If you are thinking about your career in the building safety profession, I encourage you to contact the University of Minnesota Building Code Department.
